The History of the Castrum of Serravalle

Sleep within the walls of an ancient Venetian fortress for a stay filled with exclusive and timeless charm.

The ancient origins and legends of the village

From the mysteries of the Roman era to the fascinating stories of towers and noble dignitaries.

The Castrum is inextricably linked to the history of the village of Serravalle, now a true architectural gem of Vittorio Veneto.

Although some scholars speculate that it has Roman origins along the ancient trade routes, the charm of the place is also fueled by millennia-old legends.

In fact, legend has it that a nomadic dignitary named Goto built the first castle and the evocative Turris Nigra, intertwining the early centuries of the manor with the local cult of Saint Augusta.

The Middle Ages and the Da Camino Family

The construction of the fortress and the development of trade amid power struggles and the nobility.

The earliest evidence of actual fortifications dates back to the era of the Lombards and the Franks, a period during which the Castrum as we know it took shape.

Between the 10th and 13th centuries, trade with the East brought great wealth to the region. The fate of the settlement became closely tied to one of the most powerful families in the Marca Trevigiana, the Da Camino family, who fostered exceptional urban development, transforming the village into a vital crossroads for trade.

Five Centuries Under the Venetian Republic

Beginning in 1337, the Castrum underwent a profound transformation thanks to the intervention of the Venetians, to whom the bishop ceded Serravalle to ensure its defense.

From that moment on, and for nearly five hundred years, the fortress served as the prestigious seat of the Podestà of the Republic of Venice.

Under the rule of the Venetian Republic, the village established itself as one of the most important commercial and artistic centers in the Venetian hinterland, endowing the residence with that aristocratic elegance that still envelops our guests during their stay.
